New York
⊘ The problem
A hotel in downtown New York City operates in a complex energy environment, characterized by:
high continuous demand for domestic hot water (bedrooms and laundry room)
very high electricity costs, especially during peak hours
significant exposure to Con Edison's network demand charges
need to ensure continuity of service and reliability for guests
new regulatory constraints on emissions (Local Law 97)
✓ The solution
Installation of a Green Power Technologies s.r.o. methane micro-cogenerator (GP 7.5 (7.5 kWe / 15 kWt)), integrated into the hotel's technical room and operating in parallel with the electricity grid.
The unit manages the base load of domestic hot water and produces electricity on site, reducing peak demand and the use of traditional boilers, especially in the winter months.
★ The benefits
The system has enabled the hotel to significantly reduce energy costs, thanks to continuous electricity production and peak shaving. The benefits are further enhanced by access to Federal Investment Tax Credits (ITC) and performance-based NYSERDA incentives, which reward primary energy savings.
From an environmental perspective, in two years of operation, avoided approximately 38.2 tons of CO₂have been avoided, contributing to compliance with the limits imposed by Local Law 97 and reducing local NOₓ emissions, a critical factor for urban air quality. The impact is equivalent to removing approximately 10 SUVs from the streets of Manhattan for one year.
The compactness of the system also allows for efficient installation even in small technical spaces, a decisive advantage in an urban context with very high real estate values.
⇧ The performances
16,100 operating hours
120,750 kWh of electricity produced
241,500 kWh of thermal energy recovered
Overall energy efficiency: 93.5%
Utilization factor: 89%
