Cogenerators

The problem

A biomethane (RNG) production plant in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area requires an energy solution capable of:

  • continuously feed the compressors of the biogas upgrading system

  • ensure thermal stability in anaerobic digesters

  • reduce electricity consumption from the grid

  • fully utilize the biogas produced

  • operate in an industrial setting 24 hours a day, with maximum reliability

✓ The solution

Installation of a 500 kW (530 kWe / 630 kWt) Green Power Technologies s.r.o. cogenerator powered by a portion of the biogas produced/tail gas from the upgrading process.

The electricity generated directly powers the plant's compressors, while the recovered heat is used to maintain the optimal temperature of the anaerobic digesters, ensuring the continuity and stability of biomethane production.

★ The benefits

The integration of cogeneration allows the plant to drastically reduce withdrawals from the electricity grid, improving energy self-sufficiency and operational resilience.

From an economic standpoint, the project benefits from an incentive framework, thanks to access to Federal Investment Tax Credits (ITCs) provided for by the Inflation Reduction Act covering 30-40% of the investment, in addition to the generation of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for each MWh produced, which are tradable on the PJM market. It is also possible tosurplus energy to the local gridthrough Net Metering & Interconnection programs at subsidized rates.

From an environmental perspective, the project is a concrete example of circular economy, transforming organic waste and wastewater into electricity, heat, and renewable fuel, with a significant reduction in climate-changing emissions compared to fossil fuels. The plant also contributes to the development of an advanced technology supply chain in the Pittsburgh area, strengthening the region's role in the industrial energy transition.

⇧ The performances

  • Rated electrical power: 500 kW

    Recoverable thermal power: ~550–600 kWt

    Annual operating hours: >8,000

    Annual electricity production: ~4,000,000 kWh

    Overall energy efficiency: >90%

*Continuous operation (24 hours a day)
